Research Center Michelin - Cébazat (63)

The Company Michelin, world leader in tires, has launched the modernization of its global Center of Research and Development in the commune of Cébazat, close to Clermont-Ferrand. Eiffage Construction Auvergne, which carries out the work, has entrusted Alphi the formwork & propping part of the phase 2 of the biggest building ever built in Auvergne.

The biggest building in Auvergne
This construction, located on the actual site where 3 300 persons are working, includes several steps: the renovation of the existing buildings, the destruction of some locals and above all, the construction of a flagship building of 67 000m². This complex will allow to bring together Michelin’s major professions for Research and will house, near the work zones for Research and Development Team, some training and services areas. Planned on 3 years, this project represents a global investment of more than 100 millions euros.

Designed by the Office of Architects Chaix & Morel & Associated, the project is distinguished by an alley of 300 meter long, called “Street of Research”, dominated by a glass structure of 15 m height.

Alphi takes the challenge
Several constructive methods have been adopted for this building site of an exceptional scale : in situ cast slabs alveolar slabs and pre-slabs. To be noted also, the realization of suspended slabs with anchoring metallic tie-beams for the gangways linking the 7 buildings of the project.

On the 23 500 m² of floor surfaces, the TopDalle formwork system, appreciated for its assets regarding security and productivity, has been adopted for the in situ cast floors. The Shoring Towers A120 from ALPHI allowed the propping of the pre-slabs and the alveolar slabs.

A major challenge awaited Alphi on this project : supply and installation of an impressive volume of material, as the 23 500 m² floors had to be realized in 4,5 months. A big logistical effort has been made with 25 semi-trailers chartered to supply the site, while an average cadence of 260 m² per day has been ensured.
